The UG Song and Dance Group "JANTAR" is a co-organiser of the 2nd All-Poland Polish Dance Tournament  for the Amber Sail Award. The tournament is due to take place on 12-13 September in Gdańsk Shipyard’s historic BHP Hall.

Film about the Miłość Blondynki (Loves of a Blonde) Film Society at Film Festival 

As part of a special section at the 40th Gdynia Film Festival, LOVE FOR A BLONDE – CINEMA, PEOPLE,PASSION will be shown. The film is dedicated to the University of Gdańsk’s Film Society (DKF), which has now been in existence for more than twenty years.

Hel Marine Station employees have conducted a dissection on a whale found in the Bay of Gdańsk at Stegna beach. The research team is being headed by Dr IwonaPawliczkaVelPawlikfrom the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography.

The recovered whale has proved to be a male fin whale, 17.2 metres in length and weighing circa 23 tonnes.  According to ArunasGrusasfrom the Lithuanian Maritime Museum, the whale was last seen alive by anglers on 7 August 2015, around 5 km from Klaipeda.

Radosław Młynarczyk, a student of Polish philology at the University of Gdańsk, has uncovered an unpublished novel by Marek Hłasko, entitled Wilk (Wolf). The novel has caused a sensation in the literary world and has just been published by the Iskry Publishing House. Previously unpublished, the novel is the literary debut of the author of Piękni dwudziestoletni (Beautiful Twenty somethings) although it had to wait for 62 years to be published.

The Graduate Association of the School of Maritime Trade (WSHM), the School of Economics and the University of Gdańsk’s Departments of Economics is at the forefront of preparationsfor the graduate congress to mark the 70th anniversary of the WSHM next year. The preparations are being made with the support of the authorities of the UG’s Economics and Management departments, as well as student academic groups.

The seat of the Polish Space Agency, which will serve as the Agency’s headquarters, has opened in Gdańsk’s Science and Technology Park, with two further branches located in Warsaw and Rzeszów.

During a ceremony in Gdańsk, representatives of the Polish Space Agency, the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, Gdańsk University of Technology, Gdynia Maritime University and the Polish Naval Academy signed a co-operation agreement - IRMAST (Innovative Research and Maritime Applications of Space).

On 27th June 2015, the last two grey seals which were given treatment and physiotherapy in the seal sanctuary of the Maritime Station this year returned to the Baltic. Thanks to special satellite transmitters, scientists will be able to follow their movements and add to their knowledge of young seals’ habitat and behaviour preferences in their natural environment. This information should then assist state institutions in managing the protection of aquatic mammals in this country, and also as part of agreements with other Baltic countries.

Two research grants and a place on the editorial board of a Ukrainian academic journal are the latest successes  by staff at the UG’s Faculty of Law and Administration.

Dr Iwona Pawliczka Vel Pawlik from Poland, together with the Bahamas and Palau, the Ocean Sanctuary Alliance and Global Partnerships Forum organised a high-profile symposium on 1 July this year on the theme of sustainable exploitation of sea and ocean resources.

Horse and balloon races, hunting the scent of a fox-tail, dog and even ostrich races – everything that once drew the crowds to Sopot Hippodrome is now the subject of an exhibition, created by historians, cultural historians, sociologists, museum specialists and horse lovers. The exhibition "A Gallop around the History of Sopot Hippodrome” is on at the Museum of Sopot until 4 October.
