The Financial Ombudsman is a new institution established to protect the rights of clients in the financial market. The Scientific Advisory Committee is an advisory body with the Ombudsman in matters relating to the protection of clients of financial services. It brings together individuals from the world of science representing different fields of knowledge and research centres, including Prof. Anna Jurkowska-Zeidler from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, who has been appointed Vice-Chair.

Dr Anna Mazurkiewicz from the Faculty of History of the University of Gdańsk has been appointed chair of the Polish American Historical Association (PAHA) for 2017-2018.

On 12 December 2016 a cooperation agreement was signed between the University of Gdańsk and the EXPERYMENT Science Centre in Gdynia. The agreement concerns cooperation in the field of popularising science and knowledge, and the exchange of experience in didactics as well as organising joint educational and scientific undertakings.

Between 17-21 November 2016 the UG’s School of Foreign Languages organised a trip for students of the university to the European Parliament in Brussels. Among the participants were students of Journalism and Social Communication, Diplomacy, European Business Administration, International Economic Relations and Political Science.

The grand opening of the “Dune Laboratory II” was held on 13 October 2016. The aim of the project was to create an artificial dune to be used for the preservation of dune species, including protected species, research into the survival and development of plants found in sandy soil (psammophytes) and for educational purposes. The Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship Mieczysław Struk has granted the project his patronage, with the DCT Gdańsk SA Container Terminal and the Foundation for the Development of the University of Gdańsk as partners.

On 8 October 2016 a tree-planting ceremony was held at the UG’s Baltic Campus in Gdańsk-Oliwa, organised by the First Club of Soroptimist International in Gdańsk to mark 20 years of the club’s existence.

The Biological Station of the UG’s Faculty of Biology would like to announce the grand opening of the second stage of the Dune Laboratory, which took place on 13 October 2016. We wish to extend a warm welcome to the exhibition “Polish Candidates for the Nobel Prize  – born in the magnificent year 1884”, at the main building of the Library of the University of Gdańsk  (Gdańsk-Oliwa, ul. Wita Stwosza 53).

The exhibition presents the academic work and private lives of three great scientists − Ludwik Hirszfeld, Rudolf Weigl and Jakub Parnas. Visitors will not only be able to see the exhibits but also go back in time and have a go at working in an early-20^th-century laboratory.

On 24 September 2016 in Iława the second Picnic of Inspiration was held on Mały Jeziorak lake, during which pre-school and school children and lower secondary school pupils had the chance to acquaint themselves with, and experience in an inspiring way, what the exact sciences are all about.

The event, organised by the local Town Council, Culture Centre and the Centre of Sport, Tourism and Leisure, brought together numerous scientific circles from selected universities, including the University of Gdańsk.

Paweł Orłowski is 40 years old and lives in Sopot. He graduated from the University of Gdańsk’s Faculty of Law and Administration, was Deputy Mayor of Sopot between 2006-2010, a member of the Polish parliament in 2010-2011, Vice-Minister in the Ministry of Regional Development/ Infrastructure and Development between 2011-2015, Vice-Chairman on the board of the Pomeranian Development Fund Ltd from 2016.
