On 19 October 2016 the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, Prof. Dr hab. Jerzy Gwizdała, and the Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation, Prof. Dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, welcomed the Consul of the People's Republic of China, Ms Zhao Xiuzhen. The talks concerned cooperation between the University of Gdańsk and the People's Republic of China. 

 

Humpback rescued

Thanks to a speedy and efficient rescue operation by the Professor Krzysztof Skóra Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk’s Institute of Oceanography and the Gdańsk Maritime Branch of the Border Guard, a humpback whale caught up fishing nets was released.

Admissions to the University of Gdańsk – the most popular courses

 

The University of Gdańsk has ceased admissions for the most popular full-time BA and MA courses of study. Admission still continues for full-time MA courses and extramural studies.

The Neophilology building and the central administration building, one of the newest and most modern investments by the University of Gdańsk have received the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk’s Award for the best architectural solution for the period 2011-2015. The architects – Wolski Architekci design office from Gdynia and the investor – the University of Gdańsk have been recognised for a skilful blend of solutions derived from purely technical conditions with a universal humanistic academic tradition.

In the 2016-2017 academic year the University of Gdańsk is beginning a new course of studies – Business Chemistry. Enrolment begins in May 2016 and the studies themselves in October 2016. This is the first unique course of studies in Poland with such an engineering and managerial profile. The course was inspired by employers in the chemical industry, working in conjunction with the University of Gdańsk as part of the UG’s Faculty of Chemistry’s Consultative Council.

dr Anna Panasiuk

Dr Anna Panasiuk-Chodnicka from the Department of Marine Plankton Research of the Oceanography Institute has been appointed EU expert on Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

Dr Panasiuk-Chodnicka is due to take part as an expert in the 34th meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the CCAMLR Scientific Committee held between 19-30 October in Hobart, Australia.

The University of Gdańsk has been placed fourth in a list of universities and sixth in a list of Polish academic institutions in a national scientific ranking by the opinion-forming monthly magazine Polityka. This is an extremely high position and the highest of any Pomeranian institution. The ranking is based on the objective Hirsch parameters, which show the number of scientific publications declared by a given institution and citations in other publications.
