In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject: Social Science 2019, published on 17 October 2018, the University of Gdańsk has featured in the sixth hundred of global universities conducting scientific and research activity in the field of social sciences.

The University of Gdańsk is amongst 19 Polish higher education institutions (including 8 universities) to receive funding as part of the "Excellence Strategy – Research Institution”. The aim of the project is to devise a complex, long-term development programme for the University of Gdańsk, which will allow it to obtain research university status. The project will mainly focus on appropriate research and analyses as well as study visits at foreign universities.

The project’s main objectives are designed to:

A state-of-the-art building of the Institute of Informatics of the University of Gdańsk, with a cubic capacity of nearly 23,000 m³ and equipped with the latest IT devices, is emerging in the UG Baltic Campus in Gdańsk Oliwa. The investment is partially funded from the Regional Operational Programme for the Pomeranian Voivodeship for 2014-2020, and completion has been scheduled for the second half of 2019.

Once again the University of Gdańsk has featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019, one of the most important global rankings of universities, published on 26 September 2018.

The university is one of only 12 Polish higher education institutions to feature in the ranking, amongst 7 universities and 5 technical universities, ex aequo in sixth place in the general ranking and fourth amongst classical universities.

The University of Gdańsk is amongst the best universities in the world in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018 in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering. Research institutions were assessed in 54 disciplines of science, including such fields as life sciences or exact, medical, engineering, technical and social sciences.

University of Gdańsk in international rankings

The international standing of the University of Gdańsk is gradually rising. The university features in a greater number of education ranking lists, including the most prestigious.

The Museum of the University of Gdańsk (MUG) is a newly established (2018) university-wide unit focused primarily on collecting, processing, storing and sharing items connected with the history and culture of the University of Gdańsk and the history of science.

Between 7 to 20 May 2018, as part of an academic cooperation agreement signed between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities-Vietnam National University in Hanoi and the University of Gdańsk, the Faculty of Social Sciences hosted professors from Vietnam ─ Prof. Do Ngoc Khanh, Prof. Le Van Hao and Prof. Truong Thi Khanh Ha.
