The QS World University Ranking is considered one of the four most important world ranking lists of universities, alongside the Times Higher Education, U-Multirank and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. As one of 14 Polish higher education institutions and the only university in Pomerania, the University of Gdańsk has featured among the world’s one thousand best academic institutions, at the same time coming fifth amongst Polish classical universities.
The ranking which measures a university’s academic prestige is compiled on the basis of six criteria: reputation in the academic environment, prestige among employers, lecturer-student ratio, number of citations and number of foreign students and staff.
The first four places in the current ranking are occupied exclusively by American universities: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), with fifth place awarded to the best European university, the University of Oxford.
The University of Gdańsk can also boast tenth place amongst 128 Polish universities in the latest uniRank Polish University Ranking 2018. The position received by the university in this ranking gives it the leading place among all Pomeranian universities as well as seventh place among classical universities in Poland. The ranking provides information on the most popular universities in the world and in particular countries. The popularity of universities is measured through analysis of the popularity of their web pages.
An important distinction is the place occupied by the University of Gdańsk in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018, with the university featuring amongst the best universities in the world in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering. What is assessed and compared is the scientific publications, their number, citations, international cooperation as well as the number of articles published in the best scientific journals in a given discipline.
The presence of the University of Gdańsk in the Emerging Economies University Ranking 2018 should also be stressed. The ranking is prepared by a leading global expert in the field of international education rankings, the company Times Higher Education, and offers a compilation in which universities from countries referred to as ‘emerging economies’ are compared. The latest ranking features 378 best higher education institutions from 42 countries, including 12 universities from Poland, amongst which the University of Gdańsk has come ninth. The ranking is created on the basis of a number of indicators in which universities are assessed with regard to implementing their main objectives such as education, scientific research, citations, transfer of knowledge and internationalisation.
“The University of Gdańsk features in the QS World University Ranking for the first time, which is a great achievement. In addition, it has also featured in this most important ranking of the world’s universities which measures academic prestige as the only university in Pomerania. The criteria considered include the number of citations as well as the number of foreign students and staff. In line with the University of Gdańsk’s Scientific Research Development Policy, adopted by the university Senate, we are hoping to expand our activity aimed at the internationalisation of the university and to undertake additional activities in order to ensure effective dissemination of research results in scientific circulation by publishing them in more prestigious publishing houses and journals and providing support for open access. The fact that the University of Gdańsk has featured in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018 in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering is also proof of the highest world-class level of research conducted by our scientists. The university’s presence in the uniRank Polish University Ranking 2018 and the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018 indicates that the UG’s international standing is gradually increasing, which is a great source of satisfaction and motivation for further development”, comments Prof. Piotr Stepnowski, Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation.
