Business Chemistry – unique engineering and managerial studies at the University of Gdańsk

In the 2016-2017 academic year the University of Gdańsk is beginning a new course of studies – Business Chemistry. Enrolment begins in May 2016 and the studies themselves in October 2016. This is the first unique course of studies in Poland with such an engineering and managerial profile. The course was inspired by employers in the chemical industry, working in conjunction with the University of Gdańsk as part of the UG’s Faculty of Chemistry’s Consultative Council.

Business Chemistry, the new course of studies at the University of Gdańsk, is a full-time academic Bachelor’s degree course conducted jointly by the Faculties of Chemistry and Economics. It lasts seven semesters and graduates will receive the title of engineer.

The course prepares engineering and managerial personnel for chemistry in its widest sense,  as much as in large (the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, agrochemical and food sectors) as in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (the production of cosmetics, cleaning or plant protection products, metal and waste processing etc.). The business element of the studies allows graduates not only to set up and manage small companies in the area of applied chemistry but also to occupy managerial positions in companies. At the same time, with skills in both areas of knowledge, they gain a significant advantage in the labour market over those with a typical engineering or managerial education.

Graduates of Business Chemistry will have the abilities required to design technological processes and to check their quality, to synthesise and formulate chemical products, to initiate and to supervise chemical installations, to optimise technological processes and to use the monitoring and measuring devices typical of the industry. Apart from engineering knowledge from the fields of chemistry and chemical technology, graduates will be specialists in the economics and management of small and medium-sized enterprises and in the design and financing of start-ups.

The course was inspired by employers in the chemical industry, working in conjunction with the University of Gdańsk as part of the Faculty of Chemistry’s Consultative Council. Some of the classes will be conducted by staff with practical experience in the business world and great emphasis will be placed on professional experience.

Students of Business Chemistry will study in one of the most modern experimental science buildings in Europe, the new seat of the University of Gdańsk’s Faculty of Chemistry, partly financed by EU funds. The laboratories and technology hall of the UG’s Faculty of Chemistry have been provided with cutting-edge equipment and research appliances, similar to the research and development laboratories in both the chemistry and pharmaceutical industries.
