On 10-11 April 2019 the Monitoring Committee of the transnational project Interreg Baltic Sea Region granted approval to a total of 12 projects capitalising on the results of previous projects.  

The NanoInformaTIX project, prepared by a consortium comprising nearly 40 partners, will be implemented over a period of four years. The aim is to develop a computer platform to assist the design process of nanomaterials safe for humans and the natural environment, in line with the idea of safe-by-design. The implementation of the devised computer tools will make it possible to predict the toxicity of new nanomaterials as early as at the produc design level.

While conducting excavations outside Barczewko, an international team of archaeologists led by Dr Arkadiusz Koperkiewicz from the University of Gdańsk, have discovered the skeleton of a person who died during a Lithuanian attack in 1354. Barczewko (located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship) is referred to as the “Pompeii of Warmia” on account of the remains of the town destroyed during a Lithuanian attack having been preserved in their original state.

The Foundation for Polish Science has announced the winners of the fifth competition as part of the FIRST TEAM programme. The Foundation has awarded thirteen young researchers with grants to the value of over 26 million PLN to create their first research teams.

Over two thousand artefacts, remains of a barracks and foundations of St. Olaf’s Church have been uncovered by a group of 12 archaeologists from the University of Gdańsk during a dig in the Szaniec Wschodni (Eastern Sconce) at the Wisłoujście Fortress in Gdańsk. The results of the two-week archaeological work have been presented by the spokesman of the Museum of Gdańsk, Andrzej Gierszewski.

Do you recollect a woman or a man who has had particular influence on your academic career?

For as long as I remember, the main source of motivation for the research I conduct has been sheer cognitive curiosity and in chemoinformatics, the area in which I work, the number of questions which still require an answer.

What does the development of so-called chemoinformatic methods mean and what does it involve?

The University of Gdańsk has consistently been among the leading universities to obtain the largest funding for scientific research from the National Science Centre.

The National Science Centre has recently published its latest Annual Report 2017. According to the data presented, our university occupies sixth place among Polish universities and seventh among all the project beneficiaries. As a result of competitions in 2017, the UG received 27,990,000 PLN for a total of 78 qualified applications. The success rate in the competitions was 26%.

The National Centre for Research and Development has announced the results of the 1^st competition for open projects as part of the GOSPOSTRATEG Strategic Programme (Poland’s Social and Economic Development in the Conditions of Globalising Markets). The list of positively assessed applications recommended for funding includes two projects in which the University of Gdańsk is a partner:

The project entitled “Narrow-band luminophores for light-emitting diodes in lighting and backlighting” has made it to the list of applications recommended for financing as part of the fifth call launched by the National Centre for Research and Development in conjunction with the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taipei.
