Prof. Dr hab. Adam Lesner and Dr Natalia Gruba from the University of Gdańsk have been working on a quick and non-invasive diagnostic test to detect cancer of the urinary system epithelium, commonly known as cancer of the urinary system. The method suggested provides an alternative to the currently used methods in that it is innovative, quick, non-invasive and involves nothing more than a urine sample, and research carried out on 85 individuals has met with a success rate of 100 per cent.

Interreg Baltic Sea Region Alliance

On 8-10 November 2017 in Berlin the fourth ALLIANCE (INTERREG BSR) Partner Meeting took place. The project brings together blue biotechnology actors from across the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) to develop innovative marine biotechnology based products and services. The event was hosted by the SUBMARINER Network.

The gathered ALLIANCE partners discussed project activities and plans in the form of workshops and presentations.

The FINWAP project “Comprehensive assessment of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) high-density area along the West Antarctic Peninsula” has received funding.

The applicants were Dr Helena Herr, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research (ITAW); Dr Anna Panasiuk, University of Gdańsk, Institute of Oceanography; Dr Simone Panigada, Tethys Research Institute, Milan, Italy.

Length / Date of expedition: 32 days / February – March 2019

On 9 June 2017 a new agreement was introduced which establishes a research network under the name of Krajowa Sieć Stacji Obrączkowania Ptaków (KSSOP/National Network of Bird Ringing Stations), thus bringing together all Polish bird ringing stations which focus on research into small birds, mainly passerines. The KSSOP brings together a total of 6 entities which run 8 field stations.

The objective of the COMPLETE project is to devise a coherent system for managing biological contamination (non-indigenous species) introduced by ballast water and ship hulls, appropriately adjusted for the Baltic Sea Region.

Each year, following an open competition, Princeton University in the United States, one of the best universities in the world, chooses several researchers of international renown and invites them to conduct research and participate in the Law and Public Affairs Program (LAPA).

The Foundation for Polish Science (FPS) awarded funding in the International Research Agendas Programme (IRAP). Two laureates, Prof. Ted Hupp and Prof. Robin Fahraeus, will receive 41 M PLN (approx. 9.5 M EUR) funding for establishing the International Centre for Cancer Vaccine Science at the University of Gdańsk.
