For the first time ever, the substrate specifics of the Zika virus protease have been discovered, thanks to cooperation between scientists from three scientific institutions: the University of Gdańsk (Natalia Gruba, Magdalena Wysocka, Adam Lesner), Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Renata Grzywa, Maria Łęcka, Marcin Skoreński, Marcin Sieńczyk) and the Jagiellonian University (Jose Ignacio Rodriguez Martinez, Michał Burmistrz, Krzysztof Pyrć).

Prof. Piotr Bojarski, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the University of Gdańsk and Head of the Division of Molecular Spectroscopy at the UG’s Institute of Experimental Physics has been appointed Editor for three years of the international Journal of Molecular Liquids, published by Elsevier, one of the world’s largest scientific publishing houses.

4 August 2016 brought an end to archaeological rescue research preceding the construction of an electrical substation in the area between Górka St. and Ks. Rogaczewski St. in Gdańsk. The work conducted since May has resulted in the uncovering and documentation of the remains of pre-war buildings from the 19th and early 20th century as well as cultural layers dating back to the 15th century, when a so-called sand quarry was in operation.

Telipogon diabolicus

A new species of orchid, Telipogon diabolicus, was discovered in the course of field research conducted in southern Columbia. The name of this small orchid is a reference to the structure of the gynostemium (reproductive structure created by the fusion of pistil and stamen), which resembles a devil’s face. The previously unknown species was described by Dr Marta Kolanowska and Prof. Dr hab. Dariusz L.

POLONEZ

Dr Fina Carpena-Mendez (Oregon State University, Portland, USA) has received a ‘Polonez 1’ grant from the National Science Centre (NCN) to carry out a research project at the UG’s Faculty of Languages. Her academic partner in the Faculty of Languages is Dr Aleksandra Wierucka from the Department of Culture Studies. The project ‒ “Indigenous Youth’s Livelihood Strategies in an Era of Globalization: Mobilities, Knowledges, and Identities” ‒ will be conducted until 2018 in Poland, Mexico and Ecuador.

New electron microscope

The installation of a new Tecnai G2 Spirit BioTWIN transmission electron microscope by FEI, together with equipment for cryo-preparation and 3D tomography, is currently under way at the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy of the UG’s Faculty of Biology.  It is due to replace its well-worn predecessor, a CM100 by Philips, purchased in 1993.
