The General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences selected New Members at the 140^th session held in Warsaw, on 5 December 2019.

During the December session, the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences selected 38 full members and 51 correspondent members. The selected researchers represent nine Polish scientific institutions, among them researchers from the University of Gdańsk receiving this honor.

In line with the declaration on the establishment of The European University Of The Seas "SEA-EU", the University of Gdansk has commenced the implementation of the project’s activities.

Dr hab. Michał R. Szymański from the University of Gdańsk (Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG&MUG) has received a prestigious European Research Council grant to the amount of 1.5 million Euro. The research conducted as part of the grant will offer an insight into the fundamental principles of human mitochondrial DNA repair, which will in future result in a greater understanding of broadly defined mitochondrial diseases.

Ecology, a discipline offered at the University of Gdańsk by the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, was listed in this year’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, with the UG taking the position of 401-500 in this field amongst the best universities in the world.

Three Polish universities are among the 10 best in the world with regard to the number of women researchers as authors of scientific publications. The University of Gdańsk has taken a very high fourth place, with first place taken by the Medical University of Lublin and seventh by the Poznan University of Medical Sciences. The gender diversity ratio was taken into consideration for the first time and the ranking was published by Nature Communications.

The RESBIOS project (RESponsible research and innovation grounding practices in BIOSciences), which is a reference to the STARBIOS2 project already implemented at the University of Gdańsk under the Horizon 2020 programme, aims to develop guidelines and create a model of the RRI concept (Responsible Research and Innovation) for research institutions in the field of biology and other related sciences.

The University of Gdansk is among 17 consortiums of European universities selected in the European Commission's "European Universities" competition under the Erasmus+ Programme.  The total budget of the programme is €85 million and each consortium will receive up to €5 million over the next 3 years. The grant is intended for the development of cooperation in the field of education, research and academic exchange.

The commencement of the Council of Scientific Excellence’s activity marks another important step in the implementation of the Constitution for Science which includes the reform of the system of academic promotion. The Minister of Science and Higher Education, Jarosław Gowin, has appointed Prof. Dr hab. Grzegorz Węgrzyn to the post of Chair of the Council. Henceforth, Prof.
