Ecology, a discipline offered at the University of Gdańsk by the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Oceanography and Geography, was listed in this year’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, with the UG taking the position of 401-500 in this field amongst the best universities in the world.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which has been published by ShanghaiRanking since 2009, offers a global listing of universities assessed in 54 disciplines of science, including natural, social and medical sciences, engineering and life sciences.  This year the ranking listed over 4,000 universities from all over the world. The majority of top positions were taken by American universities, with Harvard University in the forefront.

The ranking takes a number of factors into consideration. The position of a given university is determined by the efficiency and quality of research, measured by the number of academic publications and their citations in a given discipline, the participation of foreign authors in a given unit’s publications in percentages, the number of articles published in the most important scientific journals and talks delivered at scientific conferences, as well as the number of employees who have received a significant prize and the greatest academic acclaim in a given discipline.
