On 10-11 April 2019 the Monitoring Committee of the transnational project Interreg Baltic Sea Region granted approval to a total of 12 projects capitalising on the results of previous projects.  

The coordinator of the funded project “Baltic Science Network − A Science Powerhouse” is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – Ministry of Science, Research and Equalities. The project is a continuation of the “Baltic Science Network” project in which the UG participated as a partner. Expanding on the BSN is intended to bring about the implementation of a scientific policy in the macro-regional dimension and ensure greater representation of the interests of the Baltic Sea Region at the European Union level with regard to the mobility of researchers and innovation excellence within the following three areas − Photon and Neutron Science (PNS), Life Sciences (LS) and Welfare State (WS).

The main aim of the BSN Powerhouse is increasing the competences of ministries and financing agencies in order to design and implement transnational projects to support research infrastructures in their cooperation on research and innovation. This will be achieved through the implementation, analysis and assessment of two support instruments:

1. Overcoming a gap in research results and innovation (LaunchPad_Connectors): a measure to support an increase in the participation of research infrastructures from the Baltic Sea Region.

2. Increasing the interrelations between research infrastructures in the Baltic Sea Region: a mobility programme for researchers from the Baltic Sea Region.

During the implementation of the pilot programmes, the BSN Powerhouse will not only disseminate the results obtained as part of the BSN but also acquire additional funding. Mobility funding will be sponsored by BSN partners and external organisations. This will in turn lead to an increase in the competitiveness and excellence of Baltic Sea Region research as well as contributing to the development of European research space.

The project’s total budget amounts to 1 million EUR, with UG budget standing at 50,000 EUR.
