During “The World Exhibition on Inventions, Research and New Technologies” (Brussels, 17-19 November 2016) the company PHU Dytrych Sp. z o.o. from Łódź and a team from the Department of Environmental Technology (Prof. Adriana Zaleska-Medynska, Dr Eng. Michał Nischk and M.A. Eng.

The finalists of POLITYKA’s Science Awards have been announced for the sixteenth time, amongst them Dr Eng. Alicja Zawadzka from the UG’s Faculty of Oceanography and Geography. Dr Zawadzka’s research focuses on what is, in fact, lacking in Poland, namely urban development, particularly at the local level.

29 September 2016 witnessed a plenary session of the Polish Quality Award Committee held at the headquarters of the National Chamber of Commerce.

The University of Gdańsk winners of the Gdańsk section of the PAN awards for young academics for the best creative work published in 2015 are:  

·        Biological and Agricultural Sciences: mgr Monika Rezulak, Faculty of Biology

·        Humanities and Social Sciences: mgr Roksana Blech, Faculty of Languages

The Finals of the Polish Academic Beach Volleyball Championships were held between 17 and 19 June 2016 on the beach in Gdynia. The competition was organised by the University of Gdańsk’s Academic Sports Association Club in conjunction with the Gdańsk AZS Sports Association and the Gdynia Sports Centre.  

Mgr Aleksandra Kurowska-Susdorf, a PhD doctoral student under Prof. Maria Mendel (at the PhD Pedagogy and Political Science course at the Faculty of Social Sciences, headed by Prof. Tomasz Szkudlarek), has received a prestigious award from the Polish-American Historical Association for her research (on Canadian Kashubians amongst others) presented at the Association’s annual  conference.

The University of Gdańsk’s Academic Choir has taken the Grand Prix at the 15th Feliks Nowowiejski International Choral Music Festival Barczewo 2016, and Professor Marcin Tomczak, for many years the artistic director and conductor of the UG’s Academic Choir received a special award for best conductor. But that was not the end of the awards! At the same festival our choir also received a special prize for the best rendition of a folk-inspired piece and a gold diploma for the highest number of points.

Professor Jerzy Limon from the Institute of English and American Studies at the UG’s Faculty of Languages has been named ‘Person of the Year 2015’ by the Dziennik Bałtycki.

The University of Gdańsk has received the HR Excellence in Research logo awarded by the European Commission to institutions which follow the principles outlined in the ‘European Charter for Researchers’ and the ‘Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers’.

The project called Cyberwatch, developed by a team of students from the University of Gdańsk consisting of Kamil Wojewski, Damian Kisielewski, Maciej Kwapiński, Szymon Nagórski and Hubert Kisielewski, took 3^rd place in the international informatics competition “Association for Information Systems Student Chapter 2016”, in the category “IBM Bright ICT Bluemix Competition”.
