The project called Cyberwatch, developed by a team of students from the University of Gdańsk consisting of Kamil Wojewski, Damian Kisielewski, Maciej Kwapiński, Szymon Nagórski and Hubert Kisielewski, took 3rd place in the international informatics competition “Association for Information Systems Student Chapter 2016”, in the category “IBM Bright ICT Bluemix Competition”. The competition finals took place between 1 and 3 April 2016 at Indiana University in the United States. The Cyberwatch application was additionally distinguished as the most effective solution employing the IBM Bluemix cloud. The Cyberwatch system can be used to recognise acts of cyber-violence on the Internet such as negative social communication (messages, comments), the spreading of false information, stalking or extorting undesirable behaviours. The multilingual nature of this solution gives it a universal character. Integrating the solution as a dedicated extension to an Internet browser allows you to avoid and appropriately react to the above threats. The innovative system integrates the latest technologies of data processing in the web, such as the Watson Web service and REST. The technologies employed permit the development of a complex and multiplatform implementation of the solution for particular types of applications, whether web, mobile or desktop.
Unity, the second project entered, developed by Piotr Małecki, was distinguished as the most innovative way to employ the IBM Bluemix cloud. This web application allows you to search on the Internet for positive and negative opinions on individuals or organisations. It also allows for a constant monitoring of the structure of the assessments by providing feedback on information such as positive to negative opinion ratio in a given time margin, changes to proportions and developing trends. The solution proposed allows for a constant monitoring of an individual’s reputation or the image of an organisation, and thanks to detailed data, facilitates quick contact with those who publish the information in order to rectify their opinions. This monitoring system integrates the technologies of the IBM Bluemix cloud and Alchemy API in an innovative way, which was recognised by the competition jury.
The creators of the innovative projects Cyberwatch and Unity are students of the Informatic Applications in Business (AiB) and members of the Scientific Circle E-xpert (www.e-xpert.pl) headed by Dr Michał Kuciapski. The AiB course (aib.ug.edu.pl) is available at both BA and MA levels, with students being prepared by academic staff and staff from Pomeranian companies for the seven most sought-after jobs in informatics, including mobile applications programmer. The AiB and the E-xpert Scientific Circle are both based at the Department of Business Informatics of the Faculty of Management of the University of Gdańsk, headed by Prof. Stanisław Wrycza.
The backing for the trip to the competition finals was provided by the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSEZ), Rector of the University of Gdańsk, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs of the University of Gdańsk, the Dean of the Faculty of Management of the University of Gdańsk, as well as the Mayors of Sopot and Pruszcz Gdański.
