The State Treasury may gain up to 4.4 billion PLN from customs duty from the 2 million TEUs at the Outer Port in Gdynia. Devising environmental documentation for this investment has begun. The agreement was signed with the University of Gdańsk at the Port of Gdynia Authority.
“This is the first such agreement in a series and at the moment we are talking about an agreement which will set out the environmental conditions of the future container terminal. The future of Gdynia lies in a deepwater container terminal which could serve all the largest ships which use the port today. Assuming that around 700-800 people will be employed at the terminal, this will generate between 10 000 and 20 000 workplaces all over the country”, said Adam Meller, President of the Board of the Port of Gdynia Authority.
The environmental research will be conducted by University of Gdańsk scientists over the coming 12 months. They will have to answer the question regarding significant negative impact of the construction of the Outer Port on Natura 2000 areas. The analysis will comprise an inventory of the avifauna (birds) of the Bay of Puck Natura 2000 area as well as of the ichthyofauna (fish) and benthos organisms living at the bottom of the body of water designated for this investment.
“We are glad to be providing support to investment activities across the Tri-City, particularly in the port of Gdynia. Secondly, it is prestigious and thirdly, we want to prove to the entire business and entrepreneur world that researchers may prove of use in such an important project as this long-term and high-budget investment. The research will concern sustainable development and environmental protection in order to observe EU directives in this regard and prevent any future legal cases which could hinder such an investment”, explained Prof. Jerzy Gwizdała, Rector of the University of Gdańsk.
Prof. Gwizdała stressed that at the design stage researchers will have to provide assistance to constructors who will have to take account of some elements resulting from the expert assessments. He also added that university students, especially doctoral students, will also be involved in the project. “They are extremely capable and well-read, often having completed internships in other EU states and on other continents. We are teaching them what we weren’t taught ourselves – cooperation with the economy and work for the benefit of the economy”, stated Prof. Gwizdała. [...]
