University of Gdańsk in prestigious international ranking

The international standing of the University of Gdańsk is gradually rising. The university features in a greater number of education ranking lists, including the most prestigious.

As one of 14 Polish higher education institutions, the University of Gdańsk is the only university in Pomerania to feature among the world’s one thousand best academic institutions, published in the prestigious QS World University Ranking 2019, at the same time coming fifth amongst Polish classical universities.

The QS World University Ranking is considered one of the four most important world ranking lists of universities, alongside the Times Higher Education, U-Multirank and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The ranking, which measures a university’s academic prestige, is compiled on the basis of six criteria ─ reputation in the academic environment, prestige among employers, lecturer-student ratio, number of citations and a number of foreign staff and students.

The first four places in the current ranking are occupied exclusively by American universities, the best being the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The best European university is the University of Oxford, which has come fifth in the ranking, right after the American universities.

The University of Gdańsk can also boast tenth place among the 128 Polish universities in the latest uniRank Polish University Ranking 2018. The position occupied by the university in this ranking gives it the leading place amongst all Pomeranian universities, as well as seventh place among classical universities in Poland.

The uniRank ranking list, prepared by a company of the same name, provides information on the most popular universities in the world, on given continents or in particular countries.

The popularity of universities is measured through the analysis of the popularity of their web pages.

The presence of the University of Gdańsk in another international ranking, THE Emerging Economies University Ranking 2018, should also be stressed. The ranking, prepared by a reputable world expert in international education ranking, the Times Higher Education company, offers a compilation in which universities from countries referred to as ‘emerging economies’ are compared. The latest ranking features the 378 best higher education institutions from 42 countries, including 12 universities from Poland, amongst which the University of Gdańsk has come ninth.

The Emerging Economies ranking is created on the basis of a number of indicators in which universities are assessed with regard to implementing their main objectives such as education, scientific research, citations, transfer of knowledge and internationalisation. The methodology of assessment has been devised in a way to better illustrate the characteristics and priorities behind the development of higher education institutions in emerging economies, with more emphasis put on, amongst others, the universities’ links to business or their internationalisation.
