The University of Gdańsk is amongst the first five universities in obtaining resources from the National Science Centre (NCN). The ranking took into consideration only those institutions which in 2016 were granted funding to a value exceeding 10 million PLN. The total value of resources allocated to the University of Gdańsk as part of all NCN competitions in 2016 stands at over 28 million PLN.

According to data from the National Science Centre’s 2016 Annual Report, the University of Gdańsk has taken fifth place amongst those universities considered leaders in securing funding from the National Science Centre. The total number of projects implemented at the University of Gdańsk in 2016 with the funding from the National Science Centre was 57, with a total funding of 28.78 million PLN.

In 2016 qualified research institutions and universities submitted 9,751 applications to the National Science Centre, 2,397 of which were accepted for funding. Apart from the total amount of funding allocated, another success indicator which the ranking considered was the ratio between the number of applications which qualified for funding and the number of applications submitted.

The top five universities were the University of Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the University of Wrocław and the University of Gdańsk (full ranking chart below).

“This is mainly our researchers’ success. The scientific standing of the University of Gdańsk is at present rated very highly and is gradually rising, amongst others thanks to the University’s good results in obtaining grants in Polish as well as international competitions. The scientific development is accompanied by the expansion of the campuses, especially in Gdańsk Oliwa, which in recent years saw the emergence of new state-of-the-art faculty buildings, adapted for teaching and conducting research at the highest level. The next stage is activating cooperation between UG’s researchers and the business environment, and implementing scientific research. Of equal importance are activities connected with the University’s internationalisation i.e. the scientific exchange of researchers and students, conducting joint research and large projects and in this way creating real competition for universities worldwide, including the best ones”, stresses Prof. Jerzy Gwizdała, Rector of the University of Gdańsk.

The National Science Centre’s 2016 Annual Report was presented during the fifth National Science Centre’s Days which took place on 10 and 11 May 2017 in Kielce.

The largest projects implemented in 2016 at the UG, co-financed from NCN’s funds:

1. “ORCHIDOMICS – “Understanding the metabolism of orchids in their natural environment ─ omic techniques in the research into orchid adaptation and symbiosis” (Zrozumienie metabolizmu storczyków w ich naturalnym środowisku ─ metody omiczne w badaniach adaptacji i symbiozy u storczyków), (Competition: MAESTRO 7), head of project: Dr hab. Marc-Andre Selosse (Faculty of Biology), amount of funding: 2,637,800 PLN.

2. “Safety of communication during wiretapping and burglary, based on the laws of physics” (Bezpieczeństwo komunikacji w sytuacji podsłuchu i włamania, oparte o prawa fizyki), (Competition: SONATA BIS 5), head of project: Dr Karol Mieczysław Horodecki (Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics), amount of funding: 1,599,600 PLN.

3. “In search of a climatic signal remaining in lake sediments on the basis of integrated monitoring of contemporary sedimentation and the analyses of ultra-high definition of annually laminated sediments” (Poszukiwanie sygnału klimatycznego przetrwałego w osadach jeziornych na podstawie zintegrowanego monitoringu współczesnej sedymentacji i analiz ultra wysokiej rozdzielczości osadów rocznie laminowanych), (Competition: SONATA BIS 5), head of project: Dr hab. Wojciech Tylmann (Faculty of Oceanography and Geography), amount of funding: 1,399,436 PLN.

It should also be highlighted that 25 projects submitted by University of Gdańsk researchers in 2017 qualified for funding (based on ranking lists published on the NCN’s website on 15.05.2017).
