Alicja Dżuryk MA, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Law and Administration’s Department of Theory and Philosophy of State and Law, was a member of a delegation to the 13th Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), held in the Qatari capital, Doha.

UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and the UNODC’s director Yury Fedotov honoured the congress with their presence. The congress was attended by almost 5,000 delegates, diplomats, politicians, representatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations as well as individual experts. One of these was the only doctoral student from Poland, Ms Alicja Dżuryk, representing the University of Gdańsk and the European Law Students' Association as a member of an ELSA delegation of seven individuals from all over Europe.

 

The congress has been held every five years since 1955. The session covers international penal law in relation to drug smuggling and human trafficking, the rights of national minorities, terrorism, women’s rights, cyber crime, environmental crime and other issues currently on the UN agenda.

 

This was Alicja Dżuryk’s third UN session. In 2011, she attended the 18th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, while in 2012 she was a delegate at the Diplomatic Conference on the Protection of Audio Visual Performances organised in Beijing by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The ELSA delegates’ attendance at the 13th Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice congress will be summarised in a report to be published at a later date.
