Between 11-12.02.2019 the University of Gdańsk hosted Professor Isidro F. Aguillo, creator and coordinator of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, founder and editor of the journal “Cybermetrics”, head of Cybermetric Lab and member of the Spanish National Research Council.

The aim of the ranking created and coordinated by Prof. Aguillo is increasing the presence of academic and research institutions on the Internet and promoting open access to the publication of research results. The ranking was created in 2004 and is updated twice a year, in January and July. At present it publishes webometric indicators for over 28,000 higher education and research institutions from all over the world.

The visit included a meeting with representatives of faculties and administration of the University of Gdańsk involved in the promotion and development of particular UG units. During his presentations Professor Isidro F. Aguillo demonstrated how Gdańsk higher education institutions are perceived across the world through the image which they create on the Internet, presented the operating principles of the ranking and provided guidance on positioning the university in web space and the visibility of the university’s researchers in this ranking.
