On 8 February 2019 the University of Gdańsk hosted a delegation from the East Kazakhstan State University. Representatives of both universities, Prof. Dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, UG’s Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation, and Prof. Mukhtar Tolegen, Rector of the East Kazakhstan State University, signed a cooperation agreement. 

A large percentage of East Kazakhstan residents have Polish roots and for this reason the East Kazakhstan State University offers Polish language courses to its students. In future the recently signed agreement will be expanded by a bilateral agreement which will enable Kazakhstani students to complete part of their study programme in Polish at the University of Gdańsk.
