With deep regret we announce the death of

Professor Hayden White

one of the greatest American humanists,

specialist in the theory of historiography and literary theory,
author of the seminal work Metahistory,
Professor of the History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz,
and Comparative Literature at Stanford University,
Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Gdańsk
following a motion by the UG’s Faculty of Languages.

Professor Hayden White received an honorary doctorate from the University
in 2011 in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to the understanding of the manner in which language and literary legacy shape the record of historical experience.
