As part of the 10th GDYNIA Literary Prize, Dr Iwona Krupecka from Gdańsk University’s Faculty of Social Sciences has been nominated in the category Polish Translation for Dysputa w Valladolid (1550/1551), originally by Bartolomé de las Casas, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Domingo de Soto. The book is published by the Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego (Gdańsk University Publishing House). Dr Krupecka is the author of the translation, foreword and commentary.

The 10th GDYNIA Literary Prize Committee has selected nominees for the Literature Cube statuette in four categories. Alongside Poetry, Prose and Essay, a fourth category was added last year: Polish Translation. Over 400 titles were entered for the award, with 20 being singled out. The nominations were announced during the first day of the Warsaw Book Fair.

The winners of the jubilee 10th GDYNIA Literary Prize will be announced on 4 September 2015 during the final gala.  

About the book:

The debate in Valladolid was a unique event in the early modern world. Firstly, a European Christian ruler demanded a definition of his right to exist and to expand in the New World from scholars, and not from advisors from outside, self-seeking intellectual circles. Secondly Las Casas, during his struggle against Sepulveda, worked out his own revolutionary multicultural stance relating to the call for freedom for native Americans. Thirdly, both participants in the controversy are thoroughly “modern”, although they represent mutually opposed views.
