Education in Marine Biotechnology is a response to the European Commission policy promoting the development of the blue economy sector. The program is interdisciplinary, and its curriculum is based on the scientific achievements of staff from two faculties, including experience in aquaculture, molecular diagnostics, and biotechnological application of marine natural products as food components, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
The aim of education in Marine Biotechnology is to provide knowledge and develop skills enabling students to: (1) understand the value of marine organisms as a source of products with low and high added value; (2) properly apply innovative methods used in bioprocessing of marine organisms and their products; (3) correctly assess the effects, including benefits for humans and environment, resulting from the biotechnological use of marine natural resources.
DURATION: 2 years (4 semesters)
PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
-
I semester – students develop knowledge in such fields as biodiversity of marine organisms, aquaculture, biotechnology of microorganisms, molecular and cellular biology, marine natural products.
-
II semester – students acquire more specialized knowledge and skills in the areas of reproductive biotechnology, marine pharmacology, marine-derived cosmetics and nutraceuticals, and alternative methods of organism protection.
-
II and IV semester – in addition to three courses (marine omics, bioinformatics and molecular modeling, and structural analysis of marine natural products) the seminars and master thesis laboratory constitute an important element of the program. The MSc laboratory is chosen by students according to their personal interests.
The study program also includes a research cruises, internships, and an introduction to biotechnology in industry. A key element of the program are laboratory classes that enable students to acquire practical skills in the application of advanced research techniques and methods.
JOB PROSPECTS
Students can find job in aquaculture sector, in biotechnological companies which produce innovative biomaterials, cosmeceuticals, cosmetics or nutraceuticals based on natural products, in food industry, as well as in regional and national institutions responsible for the development of blue economy.
